4 Rules to Having Two Favorite Teams

Rules Proposed

  1. You're able rank them from most favorite to least favorite.
  2. They cannot be rivals.
  3. They can't be directly competing (play in the same division/league/etc).
  4. No more than 2.

Examples

I'll be using Baseball, our nation's most beloved pasttime, for examples. However, you should be able to substitute whichever sport if you so desire. Just substitute League and Division for Conference and Region for the NFL, etc.

Example A: Boston Red Sox + San Francisco Giants

The Red Sox and the Giants are not rivals and they play in different leagues and divisions so they don't directly compete. As long as you know in your heart of hearts which one you'd want to win if they played each other (especially for the World Series). I give this the thumbs up. ACCEPTABLE

  True False
Rivals?   X
Same League?   X
Same Division?   X

Example B: Boston Red Sox + New York Mets

While the Red Sox and the Mets are not rivals per se (though we can never really forget the World Series where we lost to the Mets through the legs of Bill Buckner) nor are they in the same League, this favorite-team combo is a bit murky. Because the Red Sox and the Mets play in the same geographical area you'll be seen in poor light by some. POSSIBLY ACCEPTABLE

  True False
Rivals?   X
Same League?   X
Same Division? X

Example C: Boston Red Sox + Oakland Athletics

At first glance this might seem acceptable; both teams don't directly compete as they are in different Divisions and they are not rivals. However, this is not technically true. Both teams are competing directly for the American League wildcard slots. MODERATELY UNACCEPTABLE

  True False
Rivals?   X
Same League? X
Same Division?   X

Example D: Boston Red Sox + Baltimore Orioles

From a quick glance you can see that the Red Sox and the Orioles are directly competing with each other within their League and Division. Not to mention that because they're in the same League and Division they would be frequently playing each other, creating awkward scenarios for you. UNACCEPTABLE

  True False
Rivals?   X
Same League? X
Same Division? X

Example E: New York Yankees + New York Mets

You'd certainly be an unpopular fellow in New York if you cheered for both the Mets and the Yankees. Many would accuse you of being either a fairweather Yankees fan or not a "true" Mets fan. They would probably be right. UNACCEPTABLE

  True False
Rivals? X
Same League?   X
Same Division? X

Example F: Boston Red Sox + New York Yankees

Are you fucking kidding me? EGREGIOUSLY UNACCEPTABLE

  True False
Rivals? X
Same League? X
Same Division? X
